Take a look at this heresy:
"Righteousness is the state of being right with God by complying with his standards of good and bad."
- The Watchtower—Study Edition | July 15, 2001 | Blessings Are For The Righteous One
Wow! My bible says in several places that "there is no one righteous, no not one". In the NT, Paul goes to great lengths to explain how righteousness is imputed BY FAITH.
"Abraham BELIEVED GOD and it was credited to him as righteousness."
The entire chapter of Hebrews 11 is about the FAITH of OT believers.... not their obedience. Many of them were very disobedient at times. This is very good news, because while I can't always be obedient, I can always believe! Praise God a righteous standing is not based on performance.
"by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified"
WT further makes this amazing statement:
"The one who is pure and righteous at heart gives ample evidence of his righteousness. His speech is kind and upbuilding, his actions positive and generous....How this differs from the name of the wicked ones, which becomes something sickening and putrid"!
Wow!! The very names of people who are not JW's are PUTRID according to the WT.
What happened to the "kind" and "upbuilding" "speech" that they were just talking about? Calling people's names "PUTRID" is not kind, is it?
If you walked up to a person and said, "unless you become a JW" your very name will be putrid to me.
Would that be kind? Of course not. After you get slapped in the face you would know for sure, just in case there was any doubt.

I also eat healthy, hike, cycle, travel, etc. I've climbed to Machu Picchu in Peru, as well as Pike's Peak in Colorado.
Good for you! Every day that we take care of our health , enjoy nature, act grateful for what we have, value others, and KEEP GROWING we humiliate the Watchtower and their ideology of fear and slavery.
Our lives have meaning and value apart from the WT. Especially apart from the WT. If a former JW happens to be a believer, then there is even another slap in their face since they utterly hate Christians and always have. -

Sociopaths - What's Your Story?
by Sea Breeze infirst - some facts about sociopaths.
1 out of 100 people are sociopathic and they are rational people.

I'm probably a sociopath
Oh, I seriously doubt that. Real sociopaths don't feel guilt or remorse. They certainly would not say what you just said. But, isolation is not healthy. Pets help... giving to others.... some self disclosure (like you just did here) are all very healthy. But they require a little work and some maintenance... Well worth the effort.

The "WE'RE ALL IMPERFECT" Theory.
by pistolpete ina recurring theme in this loyd deal is the we're all imperfect-----------excuse!.
the "we're all imperfect" phrase, is an over used watchtower membership cliche, embedded in the minds of jws and anyone that leaves.
in the real world, there is no such thing as "we are all imperfect".

The “We’re all imperfect “ defense is just a way to try and deflect responsibility for one’s actions.
Yep. It is also a thought stopping cliché designed to terminate a discussion. It never worked on me as a kid. It always irritated me and made me dig deeper to see what was so important that was trying to be hidden.

I have some reservations around 12 steps only because some will shun people who relapse and there's an element of policing others.
I have never heard of shunning existing in 12 step programs. Participants do occasionally get accountability partners on a voluntary basis. But, it the opposite of shunning. It's all about getting real and shining light on the issue and getting things out of the darkness and secrecy. Dysfunction happens in secrecy. Healing happens in community.
I found it very interesting how you describe JW parents as 'shut down' because they're emergency minded...so so true.
I also call this a "bunker" mentality; or sometimes a "siege" mentality. Little kids who grow up like this are imprinted and can easily live the rest of their lives in a state of emergency unless they work to embrace a different reality.
People who joined the JWs past the age of 8 to 12 are different. They have something psychologically to go back to once they leave. Us born-ins have to fight our way out of the paper bag veneer that we got saddled with. -

You give up...your youth, and when you get older and start asking questions, you lose your jw friends and family too.
Yes, I found that there was almost nothing salvageable from my JW past.
The WT is the grift that keeps on grifting. -

How many of you missed playing sports in school? I know I did. The WT was merely trying to keep us from committing suicide.... how loving.
Take a look at this fear mongering :
Problems With Sports Today - g91 8/22 p. 5"PEOPLE used to argue that sports were of value because they built character.... such arguments sound hollow, even hypocritical. The emphasis on winning is particularly a problem. Seventeen magazine calls this “a darker side of sports.” Why? Because, to quote the magazine, “winning overrides concerns about honesty, schoolwork, health, happiness, and most other important aspects of life. Winning becomes everything.”...Kathy Ormsby, a U.S. collegiate track star... illustrate(s) the sad consequences of overemphasis on athletic achievement.... a few weeks after setting a national collegiate women’s record in the 10,000-meter footrace, Kathy veered off the track...ran to a nearby bridge, and jumped off in an attempted suicide. She survived, but she was paralyzed from the waist down."
What Watchtower fails to tell the reader is that Kathy had three panic attacks in previous races and that "athletic achievement" did not cause her to jump off the bridge. She later claimed to have mental and emotional issues.
“People say I did it because I wasn’t winning the race. I won very few races. That wasn’t it. It’s like I was out of control.”
Thanks Watchtower for lying to our parents and ruining our childhoods. -

Ok, so here is my sociopath story. I hired a builder once to build me a house just before leaving the WT. He was just starting out and wanted to make a good show out of it. He did lots of extra stuff for free or at cost. It was on two acres. Everything went well. He was exceptionally bright, somewhat charismatic and knew how to tell you what you wanted to hear. We kept in touch. I later went off to university and rented the house while I was gone. Afterwards I came back and rented an office from him along with an ex-cop turned attorney and a real estate broker/lending corporation.
He talked me into lending 50K to a guy who needed money who put up 288 acres for collateral.... far above 50 K in value.
AS the months rolled by, I kept asking why I never received payments from the loan. I kept getting one BS story after another. Finally, I called the borrower and he said that Gary had told him not to make the payments just yet. I did some checking and found out that the lenders lien had never been filed and there was only a few days to file it or Gary would be able to legally seize the property as the unpaid broker. I hurriedly prepared the document and drove 100 miles to the small town and dutifully filed the lien only 24 hrs. before the deadline.
The borrower got another loan from somewhere else and paid me off with interest so I dodged a bullet.
I later found out that he ripped off the attorney somehow. One vendor guy lost 10k in furniture he delivered and never got paid. He told me that his research indicated that Gary had been sued over 100 times and characterized him as a con artist.
A few years later Gary showed up in the newspaper in a real estate deal where he ripped off a multi-billion dollar tech company in a real estate deal for 3-4 million dollars. I was impressed. After years in the courts, he finally went to trial and beat it using politically connected lawyers that somehow felt ingratiated to him. He was the best schmoozer I ever met.
A few years after that, he finally got sent to prison along with a State Senator for a ponzi investment scheme that sold - GET THIS : (drum roll ) - SAND.
Yup, sand. Supposedly it was needed for fracking in south Texas. BTW, south Texas is full of sand. I kid you not. They are both still in prison. They took millions from poor rich old ladies and greedy suckers. It has been strangely gratifying over the years to look him up on the internet and track his sociopathic rise and fall. There is a lot more to tell, but you get the gist. I feel lucky that out of everyone he ripped off in his career, I may be the only one that actually came out ahead!
Anyone else have a sociopath story?
